A retro, belt-driven power loom comprised of 20 connected weaving machines operated by a single motor embodies the essence of Showa-era craftsmanship. Established in 1948, Kurume Kasuri holds a legacy of being a representative traditional pre-dyed woven fabric in Japan. Known for its soft texture akin to hand weaving, it encompasses numerous manual steps, taking 2 to 4 months to complete over 30 intricate processes. This fabric is tailor-made for those seeking to create meticulous and distinctive traditional pieces in the realm of Japanese textiles.
[Characteristics of Weaving]
Utilizing only the warp threads (tateito) to portray patterns, the technique called "tatekasuri" or "itagasuri" weaves patterns solely using the warp threads. The term "Yukinko Kasuri" is also used, dating back to its historical origins in handwoven vertical and horizontal kasuri using indigo dye.
[Details of Arare Pattern]
The term "arare" refers to intricate patterns at close intervals. Unlike prints, patterns are expressed through the intricate process of tie-dyeing, creating an array of patterns where each individual element varies slightly in size due to the nature of tie-dye techniques. This results in an intriguing harmony within the overall arrangement of patterns, suitable for versatile use in clothing and miscellaneous goods, especially the stripe-like arare pattern which is particularly popular.
