Yamaguchi is the westernmost prefecture of Honshu. The population is about 1.31 million, and the Prefectural capital is Yamaguchi City. The prefecture faces the Sea of ​​Japan in the north, the Pacific Ocean in the west, and the Seto Inland Sea in the south.

In addition, more than 70% of the prefecture's area is covered by forests, and the environment is rich in nature. Yamaguchi has a relatively mild climate throughout the year and is said to be a pleasant prefecture to live in.

 

Hagi City in Yamaguchi is famous for being a town that produced many historical great men. People who contributed to the development of Japan, such as Shoin Yoshida, Shinsaku Takasugi, and Takayoshi Kido, were born here. Hagi City still retains the townscape of the Edo period (1600-1868), and the castle town of Hagi is a World Heritage Site.

 

Traditional crafts and Local specialties

Yamaguchi's traditional crafts are ”Hagi-Yaki" and "Ouchi-Nuri".

 

Hagi-Yaki are ceramics made in Hagi city. It is characterized by a fine crack-like pattern that is created by the application of clay and glaze. It is mainly used as tea utensils for tea ceremonies.

 

Ouchi-Nuri is lacquerware made around Yamaguchi City. Vermilion lacquer is used as the base, and it is characterized by elegant patterns decorated with colored lacquer and gold leaf.

 

Yamaguchi, which faces the sea on three sides of the prefecture, is rich in seafood such as blowfish, sea bream, and horse mackerel. In particular, blowfish dishes are a local specialty in Yamaguchi.
