Kagawa is the smallest prefecture in Japan, located in the northeastern part of the Shikoku region. The population is about 940,000, and the Prefectural capital is Takamatsu City.

Surrounded by mountains on the prefectural border, the terrain is less affected by monsoons, and the climate is warm throughout the year with little rainfall.

 

Marugame Castle in Marugame City is one of the 100 famous castles in Japan. The stone wall, which is about 60m, is the tallest in Japan and has a powerful impact.

Traditional crafts and Local specialties

Kagawa's traditional crafts are Kagawa-Shikki" and "Marugame-Uchiwa".

 

Kagawa-Shikki is lacquerware made in Takamatsu City. It is characterized by a variety of undercoats that use not only black, but also red and yellow colored lacquer. Kagawa-Shikki has a wide range of products such as tableware and interior items.

 

Marugame-Uchiwa is a fan made in the Marugame city area. The handle and ribs are made from a single piece of bamboo, and you can feel the delicate artisanship.

 

Kagawa's mild climate is suitable for growing rice and wheat. Also, salt production is thriving due to its proximity to the sea. Sanuki Udon, made with wheat and salt produced in Kagawa, is a popular specialty of Kagawa.
