[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric that is produced using a retro belt-driven power loom system comprising twenty connected looms operated by a single motor. It originated in 1948 and is associated with the Kurume Kasuri weaving company, which has been in operation since the Showa 23 era. This fabric is renowned as one of Japan's representative traditional pre-dyed textiles.

One of the prominent characteristics of Kurume Kasuri is its soft and delicate texture, reminiscent of hand-woven fabrics. The production process involves a significant number of manual steps, taking 2 to 4 months and more than 30 procedures to complete. The finished fabric is treated by steaming and natural drying, resulting in a shrinkage of approximately 10%. Kurume Kasuri is highly favored by those seeking to create finely crafted traditional textiles with attention to detail.

[Kurume Kasuri's Plain Fabric]
While Kurume Kasuri is known for its various patterns achieved through the "kukuri" technique, even the fabric woven on power looms retains a distinctive soft texture akin to hand-woven fabrics. Throughout the processes of warp preparation, weaving, and finishing, great care is taken to minimize stress on the yarn, with many steps performed manually. The resulting texture is a testament to the craftsmanship passed down through generations. While some fabrics omit the "kukuri" process and have plain or striped designs, they are all woven and finished meticulously by skilled artisans. As a result, the softness of the plain fabric is well-regarded by many enthusiasts.

[Muraito (Slub Yarn)]
Muraito refers to yarn that deliberately contains variations in thickness, with thicker and thinner parts randomly introduced. Before the development of spinning technology, such variations occurred naturally and were characteristic of vintage jeans, resulting in distinct vertical color fading. In recent times, there has been a resurgence in appreciation for hand-spun style "Muraito" due to the trend of returning to natural and artisanal elements. In the case of Kurume Kasuri, the Sakagawa Orimono company has focused on this aspect and actively utilizes "Muraito," a feature that had been seldom used in traditional Kurume Kasuri. Moreover, they pay attention to the distinct characteristics of "Muraito" yarns among different spinning companies.
