[About Kurume Kasuri]
Kurume Kasuri is a traditional pre-dyed woven fabric produced using a retro belt-driven power loom system consisting of 20 interconnected looms driven by a single motor. The Kurume Kasuri weaving company was established in 1948 and is known for representing one of Japan's iconic traditional pre-dyed textiles. It is renowned for its soft texture, reminiscent of handwoven fabrics.

The production process involves a high level of manual work, taking 2 to 4 months and more than 30 steps to complete. After weaving, the fabric is subjected to a process of natural drying through hot water immersion, causing it to shrink by about 10% and resulting in its final form.

[Characteristics of the Weaving]
The term "stripe" ("shima" in Japanese) originally referred to cotton fabric with vertical stripes imported from foreign countries through Nanban trade. It was called "shima-mono" (island fabric) because it was brought from distant lands ("shima") and later came to be known as "stripe" during the Edo period.

To create the soft texture, the fabric uses fine warp threads and thicker weft threads, emphasizing the texture of the weft threads.
