[About Kurume Kasuri]
A vintage, Showa-era, belt-driven power loom consisting of 20 interconnected weaving machines powered by a single motor. Founded in 1948, Kurume Kasuri is a prominent traditional pre-dyed woven fabric that epitomizes Japan's heritage. Its soft and pliable texture akin to hand weaving sets it apart. With a labor-intensive process involving over 30 steps spanning 2 to 4 months, this fabric is an ideal choice for those seeking to create meticulously crafted, unique pieces within the realm of Japanese textiles.
[Characteristics of Weaving]
Utilizing only the warp threads (tateito) to create patterns, the technique called "tatekasuri" or "itagasuri" is also referred to as "Yukinko Kasuri." In the past, it was woven using indigo-dyed handwoven vertical and horizontal kasuri.
[Details of Arare Pattern]
The term "arare" refers to intricate patterns at fine intervals. Unlike prints, patterns are expressed through the tie-dyeing technique. Although the design may have uniform intervals, the subtle variations in size due to the dyeing technique create a sense of harmony within the overall arrangement. This versatile, multi-purpose pattern is suitable for clothing and various accessories.
