Our fabric is meticulously woven on a collection of 20 retro belt-driven power looms connected to a single motor. Established in the year 1948, Kurume Kasuri Orimono has been a representative name in the world of traditional pre-dyed Japanese textiles. Known for its soft and handwoven-like texture, this fabric undergoes an intricate manual process spanning over 30 steps, requiring 2 to 4 months for completion. It is the perfect choice for those who desire to create a carefully crafted piece within the realm of Japan's traditional fabrics.
[Weaving Characteristics]
Half of the warp threads (tateito) are dyed using a special indigo technique known as "dan-some," where 16/1 uneven yarn is dyed in gradations. The irregular thickness of the uneven yarn creates a three-dimensional effect in the indigo-dyed sections. Additionally, by alternating 40/2 and indigo 16/1 uneven yarn in the warp, the fabric's breathability is enhanced through variations in shrinkage and tension, resulting in a delightful texture that's particularly comfortable for spring and summer wear.
[About Indigo Dyeing]
Kurume Kasuri's indigo dyeing technique continues to follow the labor-intensive traditional method called "hakko-date." This method offers a delicate interplay of shades, exhibiting both robustness and elegance through subtle color variations. During the Kamakura period, warriors wore a type of indigo known as "kachiiro" beneath their armor, believing in its protective and auspicious properties. Its ability to repel insects and snakes made it invaluable for mountain and agricultural work, and it also gained popularity for bridal kimonos and bedding due to its insect-resistant nature and excellent insulation properties, making it ideal for baby clothing as well.
