A retro-style power loom from the Showa era, with 20 looms connected to a single motor, operates to create Kurume Kasuri. Founded in 1948 in the 23rd year of the Showa era, we are a renowned Kurume Kasuri weaving workshop, representing traditional pre-dyed textiles in Japan. Our textiles showcase a soft texture reminiscent of hand weaving, and they go through an intricate, manual process that takes 2 to 4 months and involves more than 30 steps. Perfect for those who seek to create unique pieces within the realm of traditional Japanese textiles.
[Weaving Features]
The "Tategasuri" technique, where patterns are exclusively woven using the warp threads, is also known as "Itagasuri" or "stand-alone kasuri." Skilled artisans use a technique called "futahawarikomi" to arrange patterns within the warp threads.
[Arare Pattern]
The finely spaced pattern is known as the "Arare" pattern. Unlike prints, patterns created using the "futahawarikomi" technique exhibit interesting variations in size due to the nature of the tying and dyeing process. Despite these subtle differences in size, the overall arrangement maintains a unified appearance, adding uniqueness to the versatile pattern suitable for clothing and various accessories.
